Monday night meditation begins around 7:00 pm. The format consists of three sitting periods that last twenty-five minutes each, with five to ten minutes of kin-hin (walking meditation) in between. Visitors are welcome to bring their own cushions or to use some extras we have available.
If you are new to meditation, follow this link for basic instructions.
The Format
Three strikes of the bell will begin the first twenty-five minute period of meditation.
The period will end with two strikes of the bell. Stand behind your seat with palms together. At the sound of two wooden sticks being struck, bow; turn to the left. At the next clap, drop your hands and loosely clasp them at the waist. This begins a three minute period of slow walking meditation. If a bathroom break is needed, this is a good time to do so. Another clap will end the slow walking meditation and will begin three minutes of fast walking meditation. The fast walking meditation ends with a clap; put your palms together and return to your seat. (For new meditators or those who need to duck out early, this is a good time to leave.)
Stand behind your seat with palms together. At the sound of the clap, bow and return to your chair, bench, or cushion.
Repeat the above sequence two more times to complete the three periods of meditation. If you get lost in the process, don't worry about it. Just follow along as best as you can. The important thing to remember is that each meditation period is separated by a short period of slow and fast walking meditation.
After the last period of sitting you are invited to join us in repeating the Four Bodhisattva Vows or to continue sitting with compassion for all beings.
Please join us for tea and conversation.
